Why GAMSAT?

The knowledge base, technologies, and institutional structure of medicine are advancing and transforming. If prospective doctors are to keep pace with the imperatives of their profession, they must have the capability to collect and interpret data, to employ fundamental scientific principles in the resolution of clinical problems, to communicate productively with patients and colleagues, and to regularly renew their knowledge and skills. Medical schools world-wide are adapting to the evolution of medical systems and practice by instituting both curricular and admission reforms. The new graduate-entry medical programs focus on self-directed and problem-based learning, effective communication and cross-disciplinary study. By seeking to identify students with complementary skills, admission selection processes attempt to reflect the new curricular requirements. An important part of admission selection is the evaluation of a candidate’s GAMSAT score.

The Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) has been developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assist in the selection of students to participate in the graduate-entry medical programs at all Australian and some UK and Irish medical schools. The GAMSAT is a standardized, largely multiple-choice examination designed to assess problem solving, critical thinking, and writing skills in addition to the examinee’s knowledge of year 12/13 level science (biology, chemistry, & physics) concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine.

Medical educators hope that the inclusion of these skills on GAMSAT will encourage undergraduates who are broadly educated in the social sciences and humanities, as well as in the natural and physical sciences, to consider careers in the health professions.
